Creative Careers South Africa Launches the Young Theatre Producers Programme 2024. Presented by Creative Careers South Africa and proudly supported by the National Arts Council and the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture.
Johannesburg, South Africa — Creative Careers South Africa, in collaboration with the National Arts Council and the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, is excited to announce the launch of the Young Theatre Producers Programme 2024 (YTPP). This 10-day virtual programme, running from September 23rd to October 4th, aims to empower South African youth, ages 18-35, by offering hands-on experience in the world of theatre production.
The YTPP targets young individuals with little to no formal experience in theatre, with a preference for unemployed youth looking to upskill. Successful applicants will receive a R5000 stipend upon completing the programme, designed to provide foundational knowledge and skills in theatre production, covering topics such as funding, budgeting, theatre roles, marketing, and both community and commercial theatre production.
The programme will be led by an esteemed group of theatre professionals, including Menzi Mkhwane (Menzi Mkhwane Creations), Brenda-Lee Cele (AFDA), Phodiso Matloga (Market Theatre), Lindiwe Lekasapa (Joburg Theatre), Mandisi Sindo (Khayelitsha Art School) and Thandeka Nheke (Market Theatre & Bonono Kreatives). Each presenter brings a wealth of experience and insight, offering participants an invaluable opportunity to learn from industry leaders.
“We are thrilled to launch the Young Theatre Producers Programme, which aligns with our ongoing commitment to fostering young, diverse talent in South Africa,” said Mr. Stallone Santino, Director of Creative Careers South Africa. “The theatre industry, much like the arts as a whole, thrives when fresh perspectives and new voices are given a platform. Through this programme, we are not only providing training but empowering the next generation of theatre leaders to transform the cultural landscape.”
To participate, entrants must submit a 30-second WhatsApp video to 067 844 4447, explaining why they should be selected for the programme. The deadline for submissions is fast approaching, and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. A stable internet connection and access to a PC are required for the duration of the programme.
This initiative follows the success of the Creative Careers Acceleration Programme, where young artists were placed in arts organizations across South Africa for internships, supported by mentorship from established professionals. The success of the programme further highlights Creative Careers South Africa’s dedication to building young creatives who can contribute meaningfully to the arts sector.
“The success of our Acceleration Programme speaks to the immense talent within our youth and the urgent need for structures that support them,” continued Santino. “We are passionate about giving young people the tools and confidence to succeed in the creative industries, and the YTPP is an extension of that mission.”
The Young Theatre Producers Programme aims to create a space where participants can cultivate vital skills, network with industry professionals, and ultimately, play a key role in the development of South African theatre.
